The moment you make your partner the center of your life, the end of your relationship has begun.
It’s simple 2 + 2. Let me tell you a story …
Last Saturday, I hung out with Tyrone. He was my high-school buddy, and we met after not seeing one another for years.
As it turned out, Tyrone had a bad break-up a couple of weeks ago, and he was having a tough time getting a handle on his life.
Our conversation and a constant supply of beer led me to think about the single biggest reason why people fail in a relationship, and, therefore, stay single, or worse—alone. Read ahead for some new-age relationship advice because deep down, you are also worried about your partner’s increased indifference.
I want you to imagine the time when you attracted the hottest person of your life.
What was your life like?
Did you have a purpose?
Were you social?
Did you workout regularly?
If you said yes to all of the above, think about it, that’s what attracted them in the first place, right?! Yet, gradually, you started getting comfortable and whipped, and your partner slowly started drifting away.
“What do you mean by getting comfortable and whipped?”
You got comfortable and whipped when:
- You started spending all of your time with your partner.
- You stopped calling them out on their stupidity (you both can be equally stupid), which led to them slowly losing respect for you.
- You stopped seeing your old friends and started procrastinating more and more.
- And worst of all, you started skipping the gym, and that waistline started expanding.
The bottom line: you made your partner the “mission” of your life, and they began to lose all attraction to you.
Always remember folks, a person wants to be a part of your life—not the nucleus of it.
Also, once your partner starts losing respect for you, love alone isn’t enough to save your relationship. Sure, they would try to anchor you down for a while, hoping that you would mend your ways, but eventually, they would leave you.
“So, what can I do, Mr. know-it-all?”
You can start by experiencing life again – enter the sunshine!
“Funny.”No, seriously. Many acclaimed motivational speakers recommend going out in nature every day to enrich your mind and your body.
Also, while you are at it, take a long, hard look at your life and what it looked like when you met your partner—the one all your friends envied.
Now, stop grinning. Stop looking so lost and helpless, and start doing the following: 1. Ruthlessly examine your life’s purpose to see how aligned it is with your day-to-day life. If drastic steps are needed, take them. You cannot give birth to different results from the same actions.
2. Reach out to your old “homies.” The ones who were there during your rainy days. Plan a night out. Blow some steam, and get back to the real you.
3. Plan a date night with your partner, and maybe alternate weekends to explore different ideas. Avoid the movie and dinner routine, and instead, plan some activity that requires engagement and perhaps a new experience. You can go:
- Go-karting
- Camping
- Bowling
- Golfing
4. Learn something together with your partner. It could be dancing, yoga, or even MMA. Whatever it is, make sure your partner wants it as much as you do, because, hey, you two are in it together!
