“I call myself a beat analyst and a lyrical lover.” – Tamika Carlton
Being I’m from the west coast – well more like the northwest coast. I was born in the early 80s and raised in Seattle, WA. The place where the word “cloudy” is an understatement, and the place where Sir-Mix-A-Lot had one of the biggest hits in the “town.” That’s short for “Sea-town.”
Growing up in Seattle during those times, I can remember cruising down Rainier Ave. with my friends listening to the tunes from rappers in California, specifically the Bay Area.
I was exposed to the sounds of R&B from my mom with Babyface and Angela Winbush and on the other hand, my homies were all about E-40, Snoop, and NWA.
I was at a crossroads when it came to music once I moved away at 17 to head to a historically black college in Virginia.
Sure, I had heard of east coast rap and knew all the common songs and rap artists, but this experience of now getting to know true New Yorkers and other east coast peeps created a different connection in my ear when it came to all things music.
I call myself a beat analyst and a lyrical lover.
Music heals me and living in a household with a musician, I was all about hearing a song from its foundation. Recognizing the instruments and melodies was natural for me, and all of the above has played a significant role in my opinion.
